An interesting scholarship contest

Linux.com is reporting an interesting contest on patentability, any one from Catalan countries interested to apply?

Linux.com is reporting that the End Software Patents project is launching several new initiatives to help drive support for their cause. Among the new methods are a web site, a report on the state of patents in the US, and a scholarship contest promising to award $10,000 "for the best paper on the effects of the patentability of software and business methods under US law." "The project is being launched with initial funding of a quarter million dollars, supplied primarily by the Free Software Foundation (FSF). Under the directorship of Ben Klemens, a long-time advocate of software patent abolition best-known for the book Math You Can't Use: Patents, Copyright, and Software, the project is being supported by the FSF, the Public Patent Foundation, and the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC). One of ESP's goals is to enlist support from academics, software developers, legal experts, and business executives. Its initial supporters show that the project is already well on its way to building such a coalition."

Pròximes Jornades de Programari Lliure a la UOC

Des de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya estic intentat d'ajuntar un grup de gent interessada en organitzat l'edició 2009 de les Jornades de Programari Lliure a la UOC. Estic segur que podem trobar un grup d'estudiants UOC interessants en tirar endavant el projecte, que se de bon grat que hi ha molts implicats al programari lliure a la UOC. Si voleu més informació, i/o col·laborar he creat un wiki pública on tothom pugui participar en elaborar una proposta per a la Universitat.

FOSDEM 2008 Meeting

The next February will be held on Brussels the annual Free and Open Source European Meeting, this year will be many interesting Main tracks:

• Opening and closing talks
• How a large scale opensource project works
• Status update of Software Patent
• Languages
• Perl 6
• JRuby
  

and some others about Packaging, Virtualization and web.

Other interesting tracks on FOSDEM are the Devrooms, mainly one about Ruby on Rails, JBoss and Free Java. But the most intresting thing on FOSDEM are Fosdemers, mainly the best people on TI.

L'IGLU

El dissabte passat va ocórrer el que tots teníem ganes que passes, una trobada de gent Igualadina, i de rodalies, amb ganes de tirar endavant un projecte de LUG una mica encallat.
L'IGLU és un LUG format per gent d'interessos variats, va començar fa amb un grup de nois interessats en el programari lliure però tot va anar morint quan aquestes persones varen acabar la carrera i ja no tenien tant de temps per dedicar-hi. Ara aquests estudiants han arribat a ser professionals de les TIC amb ja alguns anys d'experiència, però amb un interès comú tirar endavant projectes relacionats amb el programari lliure.

De la trobada del dissabte en va sortir un esperit renovat amb ganes de tirar endavant alguns projectes. N'hi ha un parell que em fan especial il·lusió, principalment la possibilitat de crear uns cursos introductoris al programari lliure i a nivell més tècnic unes trobades d'intercanvi mensuals on poder anar explicant-nos el que fem i així poder aprendre.

Si teniu interès en compartir els vostres projectes, aprendre d'altres professionals en tecnologies lliures i sobretot sou d'Igualada o rodalies un cop al més ens trobarem en un lloc per determinar d'Igualada. Quan tinguem lloc i dates ho posaré al bloc, tots hi sou benvinguts.

Altrament si voleu aprendre que és això del programari lliure, per a que serveis allò que en diuen OpenOffice o per a que tinc el Firefox instal·lat a l'ordinador de cara al setembre vinent estem preparant cursos d'informàtica en programari lliure. Com sempre més noticies aquí quan tinguem més coses decidides.

I com sempre si voleu col·laborar amb l'associació sou benvinguts, segur que hi guanyarem i hi guanyareu!.
